The Tohunga Project reimagines an existing family home through a considered reconfiguration that prioritises accessibility, connection to landscape, and contemporary living. Central to the brief was the relocation of the master suite from the upper level to the ground floor, enabling a seamless relationship with the surrounding garden and pool area. This move not only future proofed the home but also allowed daily living to unfold more fluidly across a single level.
The new ground floor master suite incorporates a thoughtfully planned en suite and walk in wardrobe, accommodated by a Resource Consent application for a bay window addition carefully integrated within the existing footprint of two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. One of the original bedrooms was repurposed as a dedicated study, supporting evolving work from home needs while retaining balance within the overall plan.
At the entry, a new cloak area enhances arrival and everyday usability, while the existing kitchen cabinetry was refurbished rather than replaced, reflecting a sustainable and pragmatic design approach. Externally, the home was transformed through a complete repaint, shifting from a dark charcoal to a lighter, refined colour palette that complements the updated interior aesthetic and strengthens the home’s connection to its setting.
The project demonstrates how strategic planning and selective intervention can deliver a calm, resolved interior that supports changing lifestyles while respecting the bones of the original home.
